General manager Ken Williams and the White Sox came to Florida this week for anything but a Disney World vacation.

Their No. 1 priority was simple. Get first baseman and team captain Paul Konerko under contract at Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings, completing a weeklong run during which left-handed slugger Adam Dunn was added to the White Sox roster and free-agent catcher A.J. As of Monday night, Williams’ main goal had not been achieved. The White Sox met with Craig Landis, Konerko’s agent, and outlined the parameters of the deal but did not yet make an offer. “I’ve got to wait to see how they do in Spring Training,” Guillen said. “But I think third and fourth, those two guys [Dunn and Konerko]. I want to get Dunn more at-bats. I want him to hit in the first inning, so that’s why I think third hitter.”

Williams joked that the White Sox got the Dunn deal done just in time, with Jayson Werth’s seven-year, $126 million contract arriving Sunday. Williams also acknowledged that Werth was a special case with the Nationals, who targeted one player “they really, really wanted.”

While Werth’s new deal might raise the market surrounding outfielder Carl Crawford, for example, Williams didn’t think it would change how Konerko’s situation was being viewed.

“Well, I think that it’s a market that has first basemen in it,” Williams said. “He is coming off a great year but teams have options so I don’t know that he will get to the level maybe that he originally hoped for. “Teams place different values on different players and are in different economic situations. Many baseball hitters have a frustrating hitting because they do not understand the strike zone and swing at off target balls. When you swing at the wrong pitch, this will make you hit a foul ball, week balls or popups. Don’t feel like you are under an obligation to swing your bat every time the pitcher pitches a ball.

It is necessary for you to relax when you come to bat because if you don’t, the tension will make you swing at the wrong pitches and not focus on the ball. When you watch the pro games, pay close attention to how hitters contact the ball or don’t connect with various types of pitches and how it can help you.

It can take a lot of time and effort to become a good hitter. A small number of players are so good that they can begin as a good hitter, but most still have areas that they need to work on. It’s been a busy couple days on the MLB Hot Stove.

We’ve seen Adrian Gonzalez traded to the Boston Red Sox. We watched the Washington Nationals sign Jayson Werth to a seven-year, $126 million contract. And that’s before the annual Winter Meetings, which start today in Orlando.

One of the big names who’s most likely to find a new home this week is Kansas City Royals’ ace Zack Greinke. The 2009 AL Cy Young winner has two years left on his contract, and the Royals don’t expect to be playoff contenders before he hits free agency, so they’re trying to maximize their return by dealing him now, where to buy MLB Jerseys? maybe ujersy is a good choice.

Below are 10 hypothetical deals that could be made for Greinke, one for each team. I did my best to make them realistic, but remember that it’s all only speculation.

Before we get into the deals, though, we have to ask: What can we expect from Greinke in 2011-2? He may never again match his 2.16 ERA from 2009, but he’s far better than the 4.17 mark he posted in 2010.

His 3.34 FIP is much closer to his true talent level, and at 27, he still might get better. Eleven Wins Above Replacement is probably a fair expectation for Greinke over the next two years, though barring injury, he could go way beyond that.

In return for Greinke, the Royals want ”two young pitchers with Greinke-like potential in any trade for their ace,” according to FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, so I tried to include promising young pitchers in my proposed deals whenever possible.

Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers are regarded as the favorites to land Greinke, regardless of whether or not they re-sign Cliff Lee. What would it take to bring him to Arlington?

The centerpiece of this deal would be right-hander Tanner Scheppers. Baseball America called him the 42nd-best prospect in the game before the 2010 season, and now says he has the best fastball and curveball in the organization. Scheppers, 23, posted a 3.0 K:BB ratio in 80 innings between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma City this year.

Joining him in Kansas City would be 24-year-old righty Tommy Hunter, a starter with 251 innings of big-league experience. He went 13-4 with a 3.73 ERA in 2010, if you want to buy Houston Colts Jerseys, go to ujersy.

Boston Red Sox

The Red Sox don’t really need more pitching, and after acquiring Adrian Gonzalez, GM Theo Epstein would probably be reluctant to deal any more top prospects. Still, you can’t count Boston out of any blockbuster deal.

The key to this deal would be 23-year-old southpaw Felix Doubront. After posting a 2.81 ERA through 80 innings split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket, he looked respectable in a 25-inning stint with the big-league club. Yet for some reason, Boston seems eager to trade him, where to buy MLB Jerseys? maybe ujersy is a good choice.

Also headed to the Royals would be 19-year-old Stolmy Pimentel, who BA just called the team’s third-best pitching prospect (now that Casey Kelly is gone), and Yamaico Navarro, a 23-year-old infielder who hit .275/.356/.437 at Double-A and Triple-A in 2010.

St. Louis Cardinals

Adam Wainwright. Chris Carpenter. Zack Greinke. With apologies to the Phillies’ “H2O” group, adding Greinke to the Cardinals’ already intimidating rotation would make theirs the best pitching staff in the game.

The centerpiece of this deal would be Colby Rasmus. Ranked the third-best prospect in the game on BA‘s list before the 2009 season, Rasmus hit .276/.361/.498 with 23 homers and 12 steals this year.

Not the kind of player you’d expect to be on the trading block, but after Rasmus was benched for no good reason several times during the season and his public feud with manager Tony La Russa, the front office has to at least consider shopping him.

Rasmus for Greinke seems like a fair swap, but of course, these things never work out as simply as they could. So we’ll throw in shortstopBrendan Ryan, who lost his starting job in St. Louis when the team traded for Ryan Theriot.

Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles making a play for a big name? Stranger things have happened, and Baltimore appears ready to spend in an effort to avoid complete humiliation in the AL East.

This deal would begin with 22-year-old right-hander Chris Tillman. Tillman has yet to find much success in the majors (4-10, 5.61 ERA in 2009-10), but his minor league track record (40-31, 3.69 ERA) and the no-hitter he threw at Triple-A in April suggest he will soon grow into his talent.

Twenty-four-year-old righty David Hernandez has had a similar story, to a lesser extent: his 4.93 ERA in the bigs over the last two years is a significant drop-off from his 3.84 career MiLB mark. Hernandez has been an oft-discussed name so far this winter.

You may have heard talk from your grandfather about the great Western League, then perhaps your Dad talked about the American League, but you of course favor the Boston Red Sox.

 Well you all have something in common because all of these teams are one and the same, and simply went through two name changes. You all can be proud of this league, starting from their first pennant win of 1903. The victory of 1903 was short lived by the Boston Red Socks when they hit 1906 and went into a real slump. With some hard work and perseverance though, they pulled themselves out of the hole by bringing in new players ready for action.

 The Boston Red Sox are not known for defeat, and battling their way back into third place and then topping this off with the 1912 pennant win proved this to be the case.

 Then came the famous signing of Babe Ruth. That all star baseball icon made his mark when he joined the Boston Red Sox, and relished in the moments of the Sox being on top once again. Babe Ruth’s instigating disciplinary problems may have been the cause of him being traded to the New York Yankees in 1918, but there was a rumor going around the real reason of the sale was to generate funds to support an upcoming Broadway play.

Ted Williams joining the Boston Red Sox was a great event, but didn’t turn out to be such a blessing as was anticipated. Ted was not able to perform to his max because of an injury, and then ended up spending two terms in the armed forces and missing five full seasons of baseball.

 The win of the World Series in 1918 meant a victory that would be cherished for many years for there were not many to follow for the Boston Red Sox for a good few years.

 So in summary, when they were known as the Boston Americans during 1901-1907 this league had 1 playoff appearance, won 2 pennants, and 1 world championship. With their name change to the Boston Red Sox from 1908-now, their record consists of 19 playoff appearances, 10 pennants and 6 world championships.

Hey guys,

I’ve been following sports from an early age.  I’ve seen a lot of Sports figures come and ago. No one has been more dear and near to me as Ron Santo.  Unfortunately, Ron Santo died today from complications of bladder cancer. I was a big Chicago Cubs fan so this hurt a bit. Losing him gives us(Cubs fans) an empty feeling inside.  Ronnie was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 18 and later lost both his legs.

Ron Santo was the heart and soul of our fan base.  He was our leader and our identity.  You’re gone now but definitely not forgotten Ron Santo.

For many of you dealing with cancer, it doesn’t have to end up being a losing battle.  Through thorough research, you will find that there are ways to heal and prevent cancer.  I’ve lost a few people in my lifetime due to cancer related issues, if this can be prevented or cured it’s definitely worth looking into.

In closing, again I’d like to say Chicago Cubs fans all around the world will miss you Ronnie.  Your voice will be forever embedded in our hearts.  We love you and will keep your spirit alive. Words can’t really explain how much I’m going to personally miss hearing your voice.  You were so loyal and dedicated to the Chicago Cubs organization.  Chicago Cubs baseball will not be the same without you.  You were like family to many of us.

In a move that would provide protection in both the rotation and bullpen, the Angels signed left-hander Hisanori Takahashi to a two-year contract on Thursday.

This week the Sports Business Journal reported that Major League Baseball teams dramatically increased their use of in stadium giveaways in the 2010 season in the face of drastically reduced consumer spending and the worst economic conditions since the great depression.  According to SBJ, Major League Baseball clubs combined for 719 giveaway dates this season, a 16 percent increase over 2009 and a 25 percent jump compared with 2008. Meanwhile, the City of San Francisco banned free toy giveaways in “unhealthy” kids meals. Why?  Because premium “giveaways” work!  While consumers and lawmakers will debate the merits of government intervention and regulation of fast food kids’ meals, few can argue against the effectiveness of premium items – a.k.a. giveaways – whether to sell a “Happy Meal”  or a ticket to a sporting event.

What’s a premium?

Premiums are items that are given away for free in exchange for a consumer action (buying a kids’ meal or a ticket to a sporting event) .  McDonalds introduced the Happy Meal in 1979 and currently sells 2.5 million per year.  In addition to boosting fast food sales, Happy meal toys are sought after by kids and collectors alike and include games, watches and figurines with tie-ins to popular brands like Star Wars, Hot Wheels, Barbie, Batman, Avatar, Spiderman and others.  Other major fast food chains and smaller independent chains and restaurants alike use toy premiums to promote children’s meals.

Sports marketers have traditionally used premiums to increase sales for lower-demand games such as weekday games and games against lower drawing teams.  Premiums are an integral part of sports marketing in all professional sports but with 81 home games and large capacity stadiums, Major League Baseball is truly “The Bigs” when it comes to sports premiums.  The Sports Business Journal reports that Baseball teams have used premium giveaways from bobbleheads and caps to lunch tins, backpacks and per promotions to sell excess ticket inventory.  Incremental ticket sales revenue goes directly to the bottom line and an incremental attendance increase means increased parking and concession revenue.  The Sports Business Journal reports that professional teams are now including giveaways for weekend and higher demand games where there are much smaller revenue gains from tickets sales.  The reason is that aside from the aforementioned revenue increases, premium items also create stadium atmosphere and provide a traditional source of advertising at a relatively low cost per impression. Sports marketers now view premium items for more than their ability to move the ticket sales needle and as an integral part of experiential advertising, creating a memorable event that builds brand awareness and loyalty. Often times, the cost of the premium item is shared or paid for by a sponsor such as an insurance company, health care provider or bank looking to reach a large targeted audience, increase its brand recognition and co-brand with professional team. Not only can they market directly to fans in attendance, they also can extend their brand exposure to a much larger television audience and often choose high visibility items such as T shirts, banner signs and caps for that very reason.

Why professional sports teams are hooked on premiums?

Sports teams are unique in that they have a combination of very high fixed costs and finite and expiring revenue potential. Each game is a scheduled event that is going to happen whether the seats are empty of filled and facility overhead, player salaries and other expenses are largely fixed expenses regardless of gate attendance. If 10,000 $40 seats aren’t sold for a game, that’s $400,000 in ticket sales revenue plus additional concession revenue that is lost forever. As a result, teams are highly motivated to sell excess inventory and rather than devalue ticket prices by discounting, they use premium giveaways to add value, boost sales and simultaneously promote their brand and improve the fan experience. In an era with ever-more competition for sports consumers including home theater and 3D television, sports premiums aren’t going away… and guess what… neither is the Happy Meal.

The Red Sox have met with free agent outfielder Carl Crawford, a baseball official told The Associated Press on Wednesday.
